Studio Visit for One
Environment, in collaboration with Lyoudmila Milanova, 2014
This work took place in an artist’s studio within a foundation offering space for artists’ residencies. An individual studio was opened to the public for this event, allowing single visitors to enter one at a time, at set times for several minutes each. Sound recordings could be heard in the otherwise unaltered studio. Guided into the room by a receptionist, the seated visitor could experience it as a spaciotemporal storage medium of everyday actions, listening to a rhythmic choreography performed by the then-current artists in residence. The technique of binaural recording emulates human spatial hearing. Thus ghostly, bygone actions seem to manifest within the direct proximity of the listener.
